形容詞の基本形態
形容詞の形態３タイプ
形容詞の働きには３つのタイプがある。①②は名詞を修飾するタイプ。③は名詞に対する補語の働きである。
① I bought red shoes. 私は赤い靴を買った。
② I’m in the bus full of people. 私は満員のバスの中にいます。
③ He is rich. 彼は金持ちです。
限定用法
①②は限定用法と呼ばれ、以下のように名詞を前後から修飾する働きがある。
名詞＋形容詞
形容詞＋名詞
②はthe bus を後ろから形容詞が修飾している。なぜなら形容詞がof people を引き連れているから。このように２語以上の語句を引き連れている形容詞は名詞の後ろに置かれる。
数字を伴う場合は、「数値＋形容詞」の語順
He climbed a fence two meters high.
彼は２メートルあるフェンスを登った。
She read a book 300 pages long.
彼女は３００ページある本を読んだ。
There is a building ten stories high.
１０階建ての建物があります。
something, someoneなどの代名詞を修飾する場合も、「数値＋形容詞」の語順
I want to drink something cold.
私は冷たい物が飲みたい。
“What’s up?” “Nothing special“

限定用法でしか使わない形容詞
This is a main subject.
これがメインの目的です。
only 唯一の
live 生きている
living 生きている
mere ほんの、単なる
elder 年上の
former 前の
latter 後の
lone 一人の、唯一の a lone request 唯一の要求
golden 貴重な
total 全部の
very まさにその this very minute ちょうど今

叙述用法 S＋V＋C、S＋V＋O＋C、のCにあたる。
All the windows were open.
全ての窓が開いていた。
He left the windows open.
彼は窓を開けたままにしておいた。
叙述用法でしか使わない形容詞
このリストの形容詞は、名詞の前後に置かれて働く事はない。
I was alone in my room.
私は部屋に一人でいた。
alive 生きて
asleep 眠って
afraid 恐れて
awake 目覚めて
aware 気付いて I’m fully aware of that. とっくに知ってるよ。
content 満足して I’m content to help you. 喜んで手伝いますよ。
glad 喜んで I’m glad to see you. 私はあなたに会えて嬉しい。
well 元気で
限定用法と叙述用法で意味の異なる形容詞
This is the late news.
これが最近のニュースです。
I was late.
私は遅れた。

分詞形容詞・＋to不定詞・such
形容詞になる分詞
The news was surprising. There is a surprising news.
そのニュースは（人々を）驚かせた。 （人々を）驚かせる知らせがあります。
She was surprised at the news. A surprised girl is here.
彼女はそのニュースに驚いた。 驚いた少女がここにいます。
形容詞＋to不定詞
It is necessary for you to see a doctor.
医者に診てもらう必要がある。
It is pleasant for me to talk with you.
あなたと話すのは楽しいです。
Is it possible for you to study English?
英語の勉強をする事は可能ですか？
He is sure to study English.
彼はきたぶん英語の勉強をします。
He is likely to study English.
彼はきっと英語の勉強するだろう。
such
「such」は、「そういうような、そのような～」というのが基本的な意味。その他「本当に～、とても～」と訳す事もできる場合もある。
Such a man can be trusted.
そのような男は信用できる。
=A man like him can be trusted.
I have never seen the lady such a actress.
女優のような女性には会った事がない。
She is such a kind lady.
彼女は本当に（とても）親切な女性だ。
He left the windows open.
彼は窓を開けたままにしておいた。
be such A as to do「～するほどAである」の意
I am not such a fool as to believe that.
それを信じるほどバカではない。
A such as B「BのようなA」の意
I have such a friend as a genius.
私は天才のような友達がいる。
such A as～「～するようなA」の意
I have such a friend as a genius.
私は天才のような友達がいる。
He is such a man as speaks English well.
彼は英語をとてもうまく話す男のようだ。
such A that～「とてもAなので～」の意
He is such a kind person that everyone likes him.
彼は大変親切な人なので、みんなに好かれている。
